my friend is pretty cheap and has no money so he wants to know if its badd for your car to unbolt that mid portion for the exhaust.
anyone know??

Its not bad per say, but my question is, why? There is absolutely no point in it, unless your boosted and are trying to help that whole back pressure thing. Not to mention it is going to sound like complete garbage, and will pull mega attention from the cops. Tell your friend to save up and buy an exhaust.

Yes it is bad cause you will get sound vilation tickets, Major flammin by being called a ricer, and it can harm valve damage when the motor shuts down.

Huh? How you figure that. People run Open downpipes all the time.

on a N/A tc or stock, it is bad, and makes the car slower. I don't know about boosted though it seems like it will be better

#9 ·
Yes on a boosted car = better. It's no wonder you see boosted drag cars with exhaust and wg dump tubes coming out the side of the bumper. Of course that's not emissions friendly for a street car.

yeah ive even seen some integras pushin voer 500 with the down pipe actually go up out of the hood with the dump tube right next to it

If you run it in cold weather when the engine shuts down it causes a slight vacuum and pulls in cold air. When the cold air hits the HOT exhaust valves it can warp or even crack them, since there are no cats or enough exhaust pipe to warm the drawn in air. It is better to run an entire exhaust straight pipe than it is to run straight down pipe (unles you are a straight Drag car then you dont drive in the cold).

That makes sense... at that point, the TB will be closed so the only inlet is through the exhaust. If you clip the exhaust and intake cams and put injectors on the exhaust manifold, could you run engine backwards?

Anyway, you can tell your friend to unbolt the muffler section. I do that once in a while when I'm feeling loud. You'll still have the resonator and the cat which will keep the exhaust note somewhat muffled but it'll sound really beefy on startup. The drone at highway speed is pretty bad though. I've heard a tC with the midpipe unbolted and it sounded REALLY bad. You know all those "angry bees in a tin can" analogies people use for the stereotypical Honda ricer rocket? It's a lot like that. The car also had almost NO torque whatsoever. It had to be revved pretty high to even get moving.

The easiest way to do this is to unbolt the rear section exhaust and put the springs between the midpipe flange and the rear section flange and re-bolt it together. The springs will keep the pipes separate so the sound will still escape through the space but it'll still look stock and you won't have to bother with removing the hangers.

I like this technique because I've never been too big a fan of aftermarket exhaust sounds but sometimes I'll just feel the need to be loud and drive with some eurobeat blasting in my ears. And then when I grow up again I can just put my exhaust back together.

That's what I did with my 350z. Sounds 10 times better.

Doesnt mean it was good for your engine. Just because you did it doesnt mean you didnt cause damage.

And just because I did it doesn't mean I did either. What your even suggesting sounds like it goes against the laws of physics. If you take hot metal and cool it SUPER fast, it will damage and break. Slight problem though....a small vacuum isn't SUPER fast cooling on a X amount of degrees engine.

Still waiting on some evidence that this is a true statement. Not that it matters, but I would rather read it somewhere.

Research it for your self if you wnt to find it. I know what I speak in this matter is true.
