Transmission Oil question

I want to switch my tranny fluid to synthetic, specifically Synchromesh. I was wondering if anyone know how many quarts the 5 speed takes ( i am thinking between 2 and 3) and what weight is suggested. I looked in my owners manual and if its in there i must have looked over it. Any help please? Also, if anyone car take a pic showing me where the fill hole is, that would be very helpful also. Thanks

i just put in mtl in my tranny and it feels smoother when shifting...i think if i got a shoft shift kit it may help the overally smootheness of shifting quickly
A few pics of draining the gearbox are here. I left out the massive spill after I removed the plug completely. I should have left it draining as you see in the pics and had a beer or two while I waited to let it drain slowly. I had to clean the floor with laundry soap to get the oil up.
ok I am about to change my gearbox oil and I am going to go with redline, but should I get the redline 75W90 NS? or what...not sure the temperatures here are speratic, so if that makes any difference
How often do you recommend changing the manual transmission fluid?

Not NS. Just MTL or MT90. Or the Amsoil from the other thread. Any of them will work fine.

I change the oil in my Supra every 20k miles. The tC isn't scheduled for a transmission oil change until over 100k miles. It's really up to you, whatever you feel comfortable doing. Gearboxes aren't terribly hard on oil unless you spend a lot of time at WOT.
i just changed my oil to redline mtl and it is great, i notice a difference especially when the engine is cold...3 quarts and that was all it took.
so I just keep filling it until its full correct?

Which one would I go with if the temperatures change often here, I am not sure if it matters or not but I want to be sure I get the right one.
so its been a little over a month since i changed my gear oil to MTL, and i've noticed that sometimes shifting sucks.... especially going into 2nd.... during normal driving shifting into second feels like your trying to shift into reverse while the car is still moving.... i haven't noticed the problem when im pushing the car... only when im shifting slowly it seems to be crappy...

any thoughts? should i add more oil? (i have a little less than half a quart left over.) should i take it in? or is this just something in my head, and im being paranoid?
I haven't noticed anything different except reverse being a bit more touchy when leaving the garage in the morning. Definitely not anything while moving forward. I had just a few ounces left. Was the car level when you filled it?
nope... did it in my drive way and inclinded it even more by still having it on the jack... maybe i should finish off my MTL.... i read in the manual however that it only takes 2.6 quarts... and thats about how much i added untill it started dripping out as i was filling.
That sounds about right. I had about 1/3 or maybe 1/4 of the bottle left when it started overflowing. Sounds like you're being hypersensitive. I honestly have not experienced as great a difference as I have in the past with other Toyco transaxles, but I have missed third a lot less.
k, that's good to know...it only happens when i shift slowly, so i'll just have to shift it faster, and then i wont have to feel that little hesitation...
okay.. i got another question... call me paranoid, but the way i see it, its better to look stupid and ask questions to learn than to look smart and be quiet and be dumb.

I didn't lower my car when i added the MTL so that probably means that i added too much gear oil to my car.... is too much is bad? i remember reading a post about having too much motor oil.. i know that is bad... is the transmission the same way?
I changed mine to plain jane Mobil1 from Advanced Auto ($8/quart) couple of weeks ago. Did not feel any difference first, so was a little disappointed about wasting $25, then 2-3 days after the change the "crunchiness" started fading away, and now it's actually noticably smoother than before the. Good stuff.

Not really. Just extra fluid drag. Maybe an aeration problem, but as the kind of difference you are talking about, I wouldn't sweat it.
I spoke to red line and they suggest the red line mt-90 for the tC
Then run MT-90. They also told me to run D-4 ATF in my Supra's Getrag and it damaged it. I have a lot of experience running MTL in Toyotas. That's why I'm using it. If you'd rather follow their advice, there's nothing wrong with it.
personally, i run MTL as well.
I know what all of you are talking about when u say the shifts in 2nd are kind of "crunchy".... does this oil really cure that problem?
