You don't need 18's you just need decent tires. The OEM tires suck, that's all there is to it.

I figured out today I lose about 10% in the rain with mine. The only thing they hate is pavement markings. ABS goes on instantly over pavement markings, but I railed the 80 > Biz 80 ramp today in moderate rain at 70 without even stressing. T1S's are a pretty decent rain tire.
