So...I'm sitting at Buffalo's today waiting on some friends to get there for all you can eat wings & happy hour...I'm just sitting there, AC running, talking on the phone...and all of a sudden my sunroof just shatters...I was speechless, I was like what the flip...loud as hell & pieces of glass just started falling...called the dealership & they are going to fix it (I've only had my tC for two weeks tomorrow)...so...my question...anyone else have this happen to them? The dealership said they haven't seen this happen before...I was playing my music kinda loud before (have one 12 inch sub, but didn't think that would cause it...)

I wish someone had a picture of your reaction, I bet that look was priceless.

It may have been a pebble or small rock kicked up by another car or just the wind deflector didn't like your music selection.

omg i would have fliped out! that is so scary yet hilarious at the same time. wow i can just imagine sitting there when my sunroof just breaks and glass spills into my car. good thing know one was hurt (if someone was he would have mentioned it.) that is definetly going to make for a great story, almost urban legend like.

btw: i bet they are going to fix it, they are probebly glad you arn't gonna sue!

He is not the first person this has happened to. Search at ScionLife and you will see. Not that it doesn't suck for it to have happened to him but not the first.

Sounds to me like the glass might have been defective.
That's pretty crazy.

defective glass
Thats my guess too....and I hate to say it but I'm glad I'm not the only one it's happened to...or the first.....
it couldve been caused by heat if it was hot outside, even if the car was cool inside. i know someone who that happened to but it was her rear glass.

good thing the dealership is fixing it!
Well when i went to my dealer the guy told me that there was a custumer before me that his sunroof just chattered and they dont know wut to make of it. The wind reflector just chattered and their guess is that it broke the rest, but he told me the sunroof was opened at the time but i dont know, it doesnt seem common. ive been getting alot of wind noise from my sunroof and there was a time when i couldnt close it, it kept bouncing back to open. But the problem wasnt apparent at the time of the check up. Im really concerned about the sunroof, i love the car and i dont want something like a defective sunroof to ruin it for me.
I am willing to bet what happened was a combination of two things.

One, there have actually been a few complaints out there about the sunroof (more the wind-deflector) shattering while driving. In fact, there is some national research going on about this (considering that it is an all-glass roof). I am willing to bet that something cracked your roof while you were driving, but not enough for you to notice.

Two, when you get subwoofers, two things happen; Your car vibrates, and pressure changes occur withing the car.

I think something cracked you wind-deflector/moonroof, the subs caused more damage, and finally, while your AC was cranking out cold air, it caused such a pressure change as to finally break you roof.

that's a very interesting idea you have.. so the theory goes that there was a slight crack in the glass already.. add some thermal contraction/expansion (hot outside/cold inside) and throw in some 12" sub bass.. yeah that could cause enough stress in a compromised glass surface to end up shattering on its own later.. i almost wonder if a material like a 3M clear bra material would help on these sunroofs to resist the cracking or at least the showering down of glass..

I thought I heard of a company working on this.. i don't think it would be hard to get a clear material like that to adhere to the sunroof glass..

i wonder how many of the sunroof's that have shattered on their own like this have had subs in their cars.. like it set up the right resonance to cause it to shatter.. my mind is still thinking this over.. good theory..
