So...I'm sitting at Buffalo's today waiting on some friends to get there for all you can eat wings & happy hour...I'm just sitting there, AC running, talking on the phone...and all of a sudden my sunroof just shatters...I was speechless, I was like what the flip...loud as hell & pieces of glass just started falling...called the dealership & they are going to fix it (I've only had my tC for two weeks tomorrow)...so...my question...anyone else have this happen to them? The dealership said they haven't seen this happen before...I was playing my music kinda loud before (have one 12 inch sub, but didn't think that would cause it...)
possible...but it wasn't opened, didn't open the sunroof at all today.....Originally posted by onefunkyfreshdj@Aug 24 2005, 06:21 PM
It may have been a pebble or small rock kicked up by another car or just the wind deflector didn't like your music selection.
I thought I had read that it happened to someone else before but I couldn't remember where I saw it.Originally posted by Plissken@Aug 24 2005, 09:33 PM
He is not the first person this has happened to. Search at ScionLife and you will see. Not that it doesn't suck for it to have happened to him but not the first.
Thats my guess too....and I hate to say it but I'm glad I'm not the only one it's happened to...or the first.....Originally posted by WAHCHING@Aug 24 2005, 08:14 PM
defective glass
that's a very interesting idea you have.. so the theory goes that there was a slight crack in the glass already.. add some thermal contraction/expansion (hot outside/cold inside) and throw in some 12" sub bass.. yeah that could cause enough stress in a compromised glass surface to end up shattering on its own later.. i almost wonder if a material like a 3M clear bra material would help on these sunroofs to resist the cracking or at least the showering down of glass..Originally posted by coolhandluke@Aug 26 2005, 01:57 AM
I am willing to bet what happened was a combination of two things.
One, there have actually been a few complaints out there about the sunroof (more the wind-deflector) shattering while driving. In fact, there is some national research going on about this (considering that it is an all-glass roof). I am willing to bet that something cracked your roof while you were driving, but not enough for you to notice.
Two, when you get subwoofers, two things happen; Your car vibrates, and pressure changes occur withing the car.
I think something cracked you wind-deflector/moonroof, the subs caused more damage, and finally, while your AC was cranking out cold air, it caused such a pressure change as to finally break you roof.
