I was just answering a qestion similar to this about another car on another car forum and I was wondering if anybody had any insight into this.

Is the design philosophy on the tC sunroof a 'seal it to the body' or "let it leak in and out"? Or is it something completely different?

The first philosophy is basically to put a seal between the sunroof edge and the body and to keep the seal in good condition to prevent leaks.

The second is to allow water to leak past the sunroof edges and put channels around the perimeter that move the water into drain tubes in the pillars. Leaks would be prevented by making certain that the channels and drains don't get clogged.

My previous two cars used one or the other. In my Saturn it was the former and it leaked, especially if an ice dam formed near the sunroof (which happened a good deal due to the dealer-installed air deflector). My Passat had the drain method, which also had it's share of problems when the drains would clog or get stuck closed (old, wet rubber tends to seal to itself when pinched).

Just wondering so that I know which direction to take the maintenance of that particular system.

Thanks!

At least it doesn't have the drain tubes to clog and make the roof leak disgusting mosquito infested water inside the car when you least expect it.
That would definitly not be cool.

I never ran into Mosquito infestations, but I did have to take a can of compressed air and some silly putty (to seal between the drain and the air tube) and blow out a clog more than once on my VW. After that, I stopped parking beneath a specific tree at work. Not fun.
