Someone with some actual knowledge about painting want to answer his question? I could try, but it would be silly.
I found this on the web, this process includes sanding (scocthbrite). I will check availability of the prodcuts mentioned... Also, I apprently ALU oxydizes easily allowing for a very thin layer of oxidation which when painted flakes and peels (like in zoltiz example). One to avoid that is to sand the surface and then use an etching (acidic) primer...
MATTHEWS PAINT
PROCESS FOR PAINTING or CLEARCOATING ALUMINUM
Below is the required process for PAINTING aluminum:
• Blow and clean surface with 45-330SP (Speed Prep Metal Cleanser)
• Scuff sand the surface at minimum with a red Scotchbrite pad
• Blow and clean surface with 45-330SP (Speed Prep Metal Cleanser)
• Prime with any of the following MAP primers:
- Rust Inhibiting White Epoxy (274-908SP/274-909SP)
- E Prime White (274-228SP/274-229SP)
- U Prime (274-685SP/274-686SP)
- Metal Pretreatment (74-734SP/74-735SP)
- PT Filler (74-760SP/74-766SP)
- HBPT (74-770SP/74-766SP)
- HBEF (74-780SP/74-781SP)
• Topcoat with Matthews Acrylic Polyurethane
Below is the required process for CLEARCOATING aluminum:
• Blow and clean surface with 45-330SP (Speed Prep Metal Cleanser)
• Apply 74-793SP Spray Bond Adhesive
• Clearcoat with any Matthews Acrylic Polyurethane Clear
