If you paint it - it looks pretty clean. I did it once. The paint would not stay on the surface of our emblems for some reason - so any small stone / piece of sand and you will have a crappy looking scratched up emblem. I ended up removing the paint off the emblem and turning it back to stock condition.

Yes, there is a space for an emblem and 2 holes that are used to align the emblem. No, it does not look decent enough to leave the emblem off. Sucks.

^^ Very slowly on a very warm day (or use a hairdryer). And yes, there are holes.
