Eh.. I've had 3 different detectors since I started driving, ranging from $50 on the low end to $350 on the high end (a Passport, I forget the model #). I never got a ticket while having one, but at the same time I don't think they ever actually saved me from getting a ticket. They went off when there was a cop present, sure, but never so far in advance that the detector itself made the difference between me getting a ticket or not. And the false alarms were too annoying. I sold the Passport when I needed the money and never really seriously considered buying another detector.

Weigh the cost of the device over the increase in your insurance for 3 years and it's pretty cheap. Not to mention the cost of the ticket itself. My V-1 has saved me from 8 tickets this year alone.

I can't vouch for anybody else's detector. I bought the V-1 for a lot of reasons, but one of the biggest reasons is they never go out of date. You can always have it updated to the latest technology.

I don't really care if it talks to me or lights up with different colors or has an LCD to display more information than I can use. I just want a solid indication that radar exists from a specific direction in enough time to check my speed and adjust if necessary. My V-1 has never failed to do that.

Yes I know its expensive but its totally worth it. I had 3 tickets within a year's span that totalled to over $450. That was before I purchased the V1...like Lance said, this year alone the V1 has saved me at least 5-6 times.

Ok. That cobra detector isn't that great. I have the same one and no longer use it. The detection range isn't that far, and the chirps are annoying as heck. It's like your alarm clock going off in the mornings.

I bought an Escort Passport 8500 x50 - one of the highest rated ones these days. Normally will cost you about $350. I got it for $175 very lightly used from my boss. The detection range is FAR greater than that of the Cobra, and the alarm chirps aren't that annoying. Plus - there's a mute button on the cig lighter plug! Gawd I love being able to just reach down from my shifter and hit that button. (Yes, I tend to keep my hand on the shifter even though I drive an Auto)

The only bad part about the Escort is that it has a coily cord - it tends to get in the way of your A/C controls or some of those buttons down there.

V-1 and the Blinder m-20 or Lidatek, best combination out there. APR uses it for all on-the-street tuning that never takes place...

Exactly.

$400 now (well $440, i bought the spiffy case too), versus insurrance hike + tickets later. Also, it may just be because I'm a techy, but I love to have extra gadgets in my car. And not only that, but even if I'm not speeding, I just love to play "find the cop".

Btw, on my last road-trip to Philly, PA from Syracuse, NY, it took me a touch under 3 hours. My trusty V1 found every single cop well in time to slow down to the point where you feel like getting out and walking.. what is it, 55? lol. And that trip is suppose to take over 5 hours.

It's worth every, last, penny.

Ditto. That's the one I had. The cig lighter button was the best.

V1 here. Did research, looked at the prices on eBay - people are bidding used units up higher than the new ones cost directly from Valentine. I think I paid $405 shipped and still happy as a little pig - it's semi-hardwired in the tC and picks up stuff around turns, hills, and far enough to pretend that you weren't even thinking about going over the speed limit.

Simple is good. Talking detectors are annoying. We ran V1 with my buddy's talking $150 Cobra. Well, Cobra went back to Best Buy next morning.

the V1 rocks. for portable radar detection, it is the most effective unit on the market. the multiple bogey counter has saved my skin more than once.

cops are sneaky. the V1 outsneaks them.

Like everyone else said V1 pwns you and everything else. When you go to order it, call it in instead of doing it online and ask about any pre-owned units. I got mine $50 cheaper because someone returned it for their money-back guarantee.

Regardless of the price, its worth it. Mine paid for itself on the first trip.
