I like to drive fast, but I don't want to be like so many and get stiffed with a ticket. Somone I know is selling the the Passport SR-7 pretty cheap (he runs a shop).

Does anyone else use a radar detector/jammer? Also this one get's installed in the dash, where the hell would I put it? I'm shopping and would like to get any insight anyone may have.

If you're serious about a detector, get this.

I own one myself, and its an excellent piece of machinery. Highly recommended.
wooo, that looks pretty good. However, what do you guys think of the cheaper ones like Cobras etc...? Do those work alright, or should I just save up and get a more sophisticated one like Wolo's?
well, i did a little bit of research about a month ago and found that the valentine is considered the best one... but a little too expensive for me. What I ended up getting was the Cobra xrs9400 for about $150. I've had it for about 3 weeks and its awesome. The display shows you what type of signal it picks up so you dont have to stop everytime it beeps or speaks or w/e u set it to do. it has alot of different settings and color visual display. The farthest thing i've picked up so far was about 1/2 mile - 3/4 mile away which is what i want b/c i dont want to be slowing down a few miles before i get to the source of the signal.

I bought my dad a cobra, don't remember which model at radio shack a few years back for around $80. Thing beeped most of the time for no reason, and number of times the cop was there and the thing didn't make a noise, eventually it ended up in the glove compartment b/c it was pretty much useless. Do yourself a favor and save up for a good detector if you're going to go that route.
I like the idea of installing sensors on the outside of the car. I hate the look of a radar hanging from my visor. Anyone know of any other models with exterior sensors?
Wow, just read valentine's sectin on POP detectors, very interesting, I strongly urge you radar guys to read up on it. This thing is next on my wishlist. First there's that Ft. Lauderdale vacation......

you do realize that just b/c you see a cop, doesnt mean the radar detector will go off right?

also, u say it goes off for no reason, when it goes off, its sensing something that you cant sense, so u cant really say its no reason. it could be electronic doors, security systems, even some cars that have the little warning thing in the bumpers to let u know if ur too close to something
I've had good experiences with Beltronics.
I'm very happy with my Escort 8500 X50. Because of the way our dash is built, placing the detector directly on top of the dash still allows an unobstructed view from the front of the car (laser!). In fact, i'm holding mine in place with velcro.

One of the sites that helped me make my decision was this one: Radar Busters dot com

He does say that the Valentine 1 is an excellent detector, but points out its shortcomings, including its high price tag.

I did loads of research on detectors and whlie the Valentine 1 is an excellent detector, I just couldn't justify the difference in cost. FWIW, I get more POP hits than I get actual Ka band hits. Probably because the California Highway Patrol uses POP before Ka in an effort to foil radar detectors. When I get POP hits, it's not unusual to wait 30 seconds before seeing a cop. This is usually too far away for them to get a 'lock' on you, but its plenty of time to slow down.

Here's an interesting quote about Valentine 1's pop detection:
QUOTE
The November 22nd 2004 Autoweek magazine also reviewed the new 1.8 version of the Valentine 1 radar detector and referred to it as the "Chicken Little" of radar detectors because of all its false alarms and commented that the average user would end up tuning out all alerts.

Just after Autoweek's report, Radar Roy had received four of the new Valentine 1 units directly from Valentine with the new POP software. He tested these new units and agreed with the Autoweek review and reduced the filtering rating from a nine, to the seven.[/b]
Also, keep in mind that if you actually do pick up a hit on laser, there is no 'meter' to indicate how strong the signal is. Mostly because if you do pick up a laser signal, its already too late since the area the laser covers is so small.

I have the BEL RX 65-Pro model, got it on $225 on Ebay (brand new) is the Bel "top of the line" a huge step from past Beltronics that I had. Great in performance, features, fit and finish and value consider that is on the same category as the Valentine One, Escort 8500 X50. The Valentine 1 is on the $400 range, the Escort 8500 the cheapest way to get it is on Ebay, around $275-295 (brand new). My brother and dad both have the Valentine 1 and they noted how good is this BEL.
I've had a V1 for some years now, and I've never had a radar ticket. The V1 has saved me far more in tickets than I spent on it. I can send the thing back to Valentine for software updates any time I feel froggy. IMHO, that's the real test of whether one works or not.

All the lab tests are just that: lab testing. I could do all kinds of things with radar testing to make one unit look better than another, but in the end, the business problem is avoiding radar speeding tickets. My V1 has delivered the solution without question.

On the subject of CHP, I've noticed they seem to have a new policy. When they have a car stopped and they are writing a ticket, they turn their radar on continuously. When they are actually looking for speeders, they use instant-on, so you need to be aware of those short bursts that go away, but if it's on solid, they are at the side of the road writing a ticket.
I agree that the V1 is probably the best. I've had the Escort & Passport and haven't had any problems with them. In fact, I'd hate to tell you how old the passport is & still working. ha!
It's just hard to spend so much money for the V1. The only time I use the passport now is on trips. Around town, I stay with the flow, or try to do only 5-10 over, which doesn't mean you can't get a ticket.
The security gate guard just called me Speedy, don't know why.

beltronics rx75 pro - there is no substitute. full radar and laser detection ( up to 2 miles distance) and front and rear active laser jamming modules. should be offering it as an accessory from my dealer soon.
just bought the bel rx65 pro on ebay for 250 including shipping. I've had a cobra in the past, as I have mentioned, that thing was a pos. It would go off falsely much more than it detected radar, eventually we kicked it to the curb. I've read a bunch of reviews of valentine1, rx65 pro and the escort, they're all supposedly really good detectors, I personally liked all of the features that the rx65 offered and valentine didn't. I also dont really like the display and shape of the valentine, it's not really ergonomic, but I guess function over form. Also, if I were to buy the valentine, it would've cost me another 200 with taxes and shipping and all that crap. So, i'll update you guys when I test out the bel, hopefully it'll keep me out of the speeding tickets. Marty, I hope you're right, Jito, I totally agree with you. On paper, this thing looked better than all the rest. We'll see how it fares on the road.
Just one note about the laser, by the time you see it alert, you're had. There are laser "jammers" but all they do it send back a different signal than the detector is expecting. Tests claim they work well. The one thing I know for sure, if you have a radar jammer that actually jams (most of them are crap and do nothing at all), it is considered illegal to possess by the FCC. I wrote and asked them about this a few years ago when a guy came on the MkIV email list and claimed he had a jammer. The FCC said if it transmits, it's illegal. End of story.
I think I'll just paint my car with radar-absorbing paint.

I would but it's expensive AND ugly.
Weren't the Dodge Stealths invisble to RADAR?

But it'd be unique.
