over filled oil question

I had a flat tire on the way home and I stopped at pep boys to get it fixed. In the process they accidentally drained the oil. Of course they didn't tell me this, they just left me a note on the work order instead. Well anyways they filled the car with 5 quarts of oil and kept the filter on. I noticed this today and I will be getting the cars oil changed today. My question is will this hurt the engine by overfilling the oil?

Yes it can. A overfill can cause the oil to be beaten into a foamy froth that can cause oil pick-up problems with the oil pump. Not likely, but possible depending on the amount of overfill and engine design. I would let out the excess as soon as possible to be on the safe side.
How do you blindly pour in 5 quarts?
Because you work at pep boys making 5.15 an hour and you don't care at all.
thanks for the advice. I called pep boys and they are going to credit my bill. I was very upset the fact that I came in for tire service and they drained the oil. I use royal purple oil and recently had it changed. So today I went and had another oil change done with my oil instead of their proline stuff they put in..
Credit your bill? Does that cover your lost time and cost of replacing the crap they put in your car with RP? I'd be asking for WAY more than just a credit.
I have a 2006 scion tc. The car had a little too much oil added to it. I was driving and I couldn't get the gas pedal to do anything until I hit it several times and then it drove fine until I had to stop. I drove less than 5 miles to get home safe. The car didn't make any noises just the acceleration was the problem. I did notice oil in the tail pipe though when I got home. It also started right up and went in reverse and put it in first gear and went forward with no issues after getting home. Do you think once the oil is changed the car will be OK or have I ruined the car? Also the car is not stock. It's had a lot of performance parts put on it and a turbo and it's older with 160k miles. Only about a cup or less was added. Also no frothing on the dip stick but that was looked at a few hours after getting home.
If it's a little too much oil there shouldn't be too much to worry, but too much and the oil can foam and lose some of its viscosity protection. Too much can foul your spark plugs and end up ruining your catalytic converter. I don't want you to worry about that if this only happened once it has to be frequent to do damage. Again all this is speculation due to not knowing how much and for how long. Checking with the dip stick, is it at its proper level at this time? If it's at the proper level and your car is not misfiring then it should be OK. If not ,you can drain a little to the proper level.

Thank you for replying.
I'm trying to get someone to come and drain the oil out or do an oil change. The dip stick in this car only has a dot at the bottom and a dot towards the top. It is over the top dot but I have not moved or started it since Thursday when this happened. I am terrified I've ruined the car bc of the black oil in the muffler and the fact the oil is still in the car, plus I drove it and it wasn't misfiring I just had issues with the gas pedal not wanting to Rev the engine or wanting to get up and go. Once it would go it ran great. Every time I had to stop was the issue, if it would get going again. I'm praying once this oil gets drained out it will be OK otherwise I've ruined the only car I have. Thank you again.
Don't fret. Overfilled first and foremost would would affect your spark plugs, and the combustion chamber is hot enough to burn it away. If you continue driving long period it may foul up the tip of the spark plugs, but it would take some time. Now if it's just a little passed the top dot, you should still be fine. If it's an inch above, yeah you're maybe a quart over. If it's just a little over the top dot your problem may be elsewhere.

I finally got it drained out. Car ran like a champ so far. Just smoking white smoke. There is some oil in the tail pipe, though. I'm just going to clean it out and see if it comes back. Thank you for reaching out and making me feel much better about my stupid mistake 🙃 🙂 I'm also going to get an oil change
