uhh...can u get a key copy done at like walmart or smtg? or do u have to buy one from the dealership? tks

If you want to start the engine, dealer only. If you just want a key to open the doors in case you lock yourself out, then you can get one anywhere.

tC's have the engine immobilizer. You'll need a key with a chip in it to start the car.

Really..?

I should just make a copy at a hardware store for $2 then, because I'd love to keep a spare in my walet or something so when I have to start my car when it's FREEZING out I can keep the doors locked till I'm ready to go.

My dealer gave me 2 Remote keys, 1 Valet key, and 2 door-only keys.

My dealer didn't have time to make flat copies of the key between when the car came in and when I snatched it up.

I also have 2 master button keys, and a valet key. But my family has the valet key (in case they need to move my car, or drive it if absolutely necessary), and I'm keeping the 2nd key in a safe, just in case I say loose my keys, or I fall in a pool of water and i wreck the key, etc.. lots of things could happen. That's why I want a $2 spare.

That raises a really interesting question. If your keys get all wet and the battery/remote dies, does the engine still start? I guess the real question is, does the RFID type chip get exposed to the elements or is it completely sealed so it is impervious to water/chemical damage?

Anybody know the real answer, I sure don't?

i would assume it would work, since the valet key has no electronics, right? not that i have gotten either key wet, if the valet key has no battery, then theoretically, it shouldn't matter for the master, oh enough speculating, lets just wait for inevitable god

the whole inside is a sealed unit. wet or not, it will work just fine unless an impact of some kind breaks the inner unit.

I was at a Chamber of Commerce meeting last month and they mentioned that there is an Assembly Bill in the works to make the information available to the registered owner allowing us to get a replacement key from a Locksmith or other means. Here is a lengthy read but does show that it is in progress. Dont know if this is just for California.

Awesome. Build a better mousetrap, then open the backdoor to all the criminals. Verify the identity of the owners? We don't even want to open that can of worms. It SHOULD be hard to copy a key. CSAA just doesn't want to pay for this as a member service anymore, and they don't want to pay for the tows. But they sure like the reduced theft rates when their actuarials figure comprehensive insurance.

CA sucks. This is about the dumbest waste of money the state could entertain.
