Uh, use overdrive in an auto to slow a car down? That's not what it's for. Overdrive just lowers your final gear ratio so you get better mileage. If you want to help your car deal with a hill in an auto, you could put the car in N, or 3 (or the appropriate gear for your speed) [take the overdrive off], so you're using your engine to brake more.

Those methods mimic downshifting with a standard transmission.
well the hill is long, so pressin the break for a long time will get the break pretty hot, n our car only have D 2 L, 2 is lil too low, if its in 2 its goin around like 4-5k RPM....
You're forgetting 3rd gear.
I always use my transmission to slow my car.

Much better than using the brakes.
i duno how 2 get into 3rd gear n keep it there, only way i can think of is usin overdrive off

Step 1.) Take the shifter while it is in the D position and push it left into the 3 position.

Step 2.) There is no step 2
hahahhahah! I forgot how awesome you guys were.
apparently im not talkin about the tC
im talkin about parent's other car

i thought if you heat up the tranny fluid when you do that stuff... that could result in your car blowing up and you'll die....

okay... maybe im lying about blowing up and dying, but im pretty sure your tranny fluid heats up, and that's not a good thing
Engines work really well as brakes!!

Turning off O/D on a 4-speed auto w/O/D is the same as sticking the tC in 3rd from D.

no1 "really" answered my question, is it good or bad?? i seen ppl talk about long down hill use lower gear instead of break, so O/D off the same or not?
and how do you turn the overdrive off??

there is no button on our tc's is there???
i mean shifting into 3rd is easy but is there an overdrive button?

No there isn't and it's the same thing--the car will go no higher than third gear, that's all that putting it to 3 or turning off O/D will do.

It's not bad for the car to take long downhill grades with O/D off or in 3, so long as you put it back to 4 when the downgrade is over (I'm assuming you don't drive down something like Pike's Peak daily and have downhill grades lasting an hour long).

lol no! juss like a 5-10 downhill road
thx ed!

True but why waste your engine like that, your just putting more wear and tear on your engine, the price of brake pads aren't to bad you know, price of an engine or transmission is much more costly
Note the sig block. Sarcasm city here...
