I wouldn't worry about the smell, but then again, mine came used, so I didn't experience that. Oh yeah, and I thought it was loud at first too in relation to stock, but now it sounds great to me! Congrats.
It looks to me like he just used the stock jack. If you're asking for this exhaust install though, I did mine with the car on the ground, and it was perfectly fine.
