I think that every car should just be manual. Manual helps you pay more attention to what you are doing on the road. Because you are more in depth i will never own an automatic car, because if i ever got a automatic it would just become to boring and mundane. The reason why we have people geting in to accidents because they werent paying attention. I would love to see a stuy on how man people driveing sticks vs Auto cause the accident i bet it would be auto ove stick because you dont have to pay much atention when driveing auto. Now the worst is driveing on the phone PERIOD. You should never do this even with a hands free device. The hand being on the cell phone isnt the cause. How many of you drive with one hand all the time i know i do 98% of the time. It the talking on the phone period. The reason being try talking on the phone and watching TV you cant pay attention to both now can you. The answer is NO it is either the TV or the person on the other end of the phone. Also it isnt like talking to somebody in the car reason because you are imagineing what the person on the other end looks like and is reacting but if they were in the car with you you always could take a quick glanse at them while you speak as you look in you mirror. there you have my 2 cents i have plenty more oppinions on driveing while on the phone and the reason why it is illegal.

I guess you've never driven with someone who can't talk to you without looking at you.

Driving with handsfree is no different than a conversation in the car. Driving with a radio is just as distracting, so they should ban all car audio. And while they are at it, they should make smoking in the car illegal because accidents have been caused by smokers dropping cigarettes in the car, and by smokers using their lighters and not paying attention while lighting a cigarette.

Of course cupholders would have to go, because you can't drink and drive, everyone knows that, and for sure, they should get rid of all those distracting gauges and lights. Lord knows what you might hit if you're watching a gauge instead of the road.

Then too, we need to ban all children from riding in the car, because they scream and yell and constantly ask, "are we there yet?" What could be more distracting that children in the car?

Of course outside the car, we really need to dispense with all the billboads, street signs, and other distractions we are constantly forced to deal with.

See what I mean? You have to manage the driving task, you have to manage your attention, and it doesn't matter what the distraction is, it's up to you to make it work or suffer the consequences. Legislation is not the solution, driver education and training is.

Yea i know what you mean. Then why is talking on the cell phone illgeal in NY well that is whith out a hands free device, but they are trying to make driveing on the cell phone period illegal also but yes i agree there are plenty of other destracions there just that the cell phone has come to light and not the others. But oh well I still hate Automatic transmissions.

Legislators often do things to "prove" they are "doing something" about the "problem." There are so many examples of this and the stupidity of the general public when they do this that I don't even want to start pointing them out. You get the picture.

I love a manual transmission.

My future Mrs. was shocked that I could drive a stick because she had never met a guy that could. I cant imagine.

Unlike Lance (Been lurking here for about a year), I didnt start driving until 9. My parents told me that if I couldnt drive a manual, I couldnt get a license, so I learned on my Dads Vette.

When my fiancee told me that her parents wouldnt let her marry a guy that couldnt drive a stick, I called my parents to thank them.

Lance, one thing that I hate is being a passenger or driver and the other person is expecting you to be looking at them. As a passenger I am never comfortable because...well just because, as a driver, I have a responsibility to drive, not make eye contact.

EDIT: And as far as switching over, it should be fairly easy. A little time and practice and all will be grand. I learned to drive a manual in 2 hours.

Yeah, it scares me too. But I don't think we need to legislate a solution!

Cell phones should be baned from being used while in a moveing vehicle. and yes it is different to talk to some one who is right there in the car with you and a person on the phone it is sicentifacly proven that it is. the cell phone is more destracting to talk on it then to talk to a person in the car.

theres definitely a difference between talking on a cell phone and talking to a passenger. when you are talking to a passenger you can just ignore them when you need to and pay attention to the road, but you have the need to stay engaged in conversation when you are talking to someone on the phone, therefore distracting you

i dont think the government should have to pass legislation to regulate talking on cell phones. people should just use common sense and not call anyone while driving or if someone calls you, say "ill call you back later"

lol skin, i never heard of parents making their kids learn stick. i had to argue for the "privilege" (according to my parents) of getting a stick.

You guys who would ban cell phones are being foolish. So should we ban cop's radios? I did patrol for a physical security company for a year, and I lived and died by the radio. It took a lot more to manage than any cellphone I've had. Would you suggest ambulance drivers give up their radios too?

This is such a stupid discussion. It's all about attention management. If you get in an accident because you can't manage your attention, you shouldn't be driving anyway. And yes, talking on my bluetooth headset in my car is no more engaging than talking to a passenger. Simple attention management, nothing more.

I drive vehicles that need to have a radio in them and a radio is by far not as distracting as a cell phone. It should be if your in a moveing car dont talk on a cell phone.
