Here are old pics of my car with 18x8.5, 225/45-18s.

They were +40 and rubbed, which is why I no longer use this setup.

I too like those Axis Hiro 18x8.5 +35. But don't like 225/40/18 on those as it seems undersized. But if 245/35/18 will rub then there is no point to get 8.5" wheels.


You don't think it rubbed due to 45's instead of 40's ?

+40; after I brought my car back to let them know they were rubbing, they showed me the boxes for the wheels and they were marked for 40 ET.

+35 will rub for sure!

+45 would not rub on 8.5 but it would be very close; +48 is most definitely safe.

I know it rubbed due to offset and not due to profile because I developed a half millimeter deep groove in my sidewall, right across the text, after ~500 miles of driving. I even know where in my fender the contact was occuring, because the rubbing/grazing only occurred occasionally with the steering wheel turned a particular distance while driving over bumps or dips mid-turn.

In order to have a stretched appearance the tire width would have to be equal to or less than the wheel width. Optimal size for an 8.5 would be a 245 but you can't fit a 245 on an 8.5 +35 on the tC without severe rubbing. A 225 is the best you can hope for with that combo.

Even 225 on 8.5 +35 will rub; I was getting minor rubbing with 225s on 8.5 +40, so +35 is a definite no-go.

Really? I know of at least one tC running the wheel he's looking at in 19x8.5 front and 19x9.5 rear with a 225 and he "claims" of no rubbing.

Did you just rub on turns or all the time?

I also rubbed in a straight line when carrying multiple passengers and/or when driving through deep dips or high humps.
