Yes, they bought GM's share of Fuji Heavy Industries which owns Subaru.

You know once upon a time-- and not in the too distant past, Toyota used to make performance AWD cars. Anybody remember the Celica GT-Four? They could certainly do it again.

Toyota is, in fact, gearing up right this very minute over in Subaru's Indiana plant in order to increase Camry manufacturing capacity to supplement Kentucky.

Hey, somebody else knows the reason Toyota bought that stake in Fuji and that it wasn't for the awd. Any car company can do that. They wanted the plant!

This isn't a unique strategy, really; GM entertained a possible partnership with Renault-Nissan, and GM was looking for cash + technology, whilst Nissan-Renault wanted only factory capacity--Kirk Kerkorian declined. Right after that, he sold his part in GM.

Now Ford has been the one in talks with Nissan-Renault for the past few weeks, and last I checked, they were still talking, but there has certainly been nothing concrete to come out of these, "talks." On the one hand, I'd hate to see a detrimental effect on Nissan product quality or engineering from a possible partnership; on the other hand, as someone born in this country, it wouldn't hurt to see someone lend a helping hand to our ailing domestic marques. As much as I hate a whole lot about my own country, I'd rather see it all improve, rather than just watch it flail about in pain. The USA needs to step up to the Toyota juggernaut and show the world what we've all always hoped it ought to be capable of.
