Default New hatches

So ....

Honda is coming out with (although no word on whether the US will get it) a new Civic Type R with 306 HP. Still FWD

in the meantime

Ford is supposed to be releasing the new Focus RS in the US with over 320 HP and AWD

Both are rumored to be $30k - $40k

I personally do not see why anyone would buy a 306 HP FWD civic for that price, but the Focus? Maybe. Lots of fun debates on the two cars on many forums.

My take is that the fanboy market who would love a 300hp FWD civic cant afford that price, while the people that can would not really WANT a factory built 300HP FWD for that price.

The focus is going to have the issue of people not wanting to pay that much for a focus, but it does at least have AWD so it makes a bit more sense. The Ford reliability looks pretty good against the other AWD's in the 300 hp range (STI or Evo) ... and the cars fit and finish is likely better. I think it will depend on what AWD system they use and whether it compares to the other two.

But I just still cant see the real market for that Civic And the Civic is ugly as hell to boot in my opinion!

The civic is pretty damn ugly.

I'm still not sure what to think about the RS. Potential beast... yes but hopefully it's not plagued by the same brake/torque vectoring issues that beset the ST models. Also, "drift mode"? Really? What is this, a crazy kart? I can just picture all the wannabe ken block's misusing that all too frequently and not on track/closed conditions.

Yeah I wondered that about the drift mode. I saw an article that explained it better somewhere but never read it.

The issue with the Civic crowd is they all want the cheap, glorious performance of the old ITR or the late 80's Civic Si hatch. While those cars had great suspension, one of the big drivers of their handling success was the light weight, which you will never see in a modern car with a low price due to the added creature comforts and safety requirements.

It is cool though that this new type R is putting down sub 8 min laps on the Ring though, so handling seems to be pretty good. However, for street handling and autocross use the weight is going to hurt more over the old old versions.

Not to mention that kind of power and orientation is going to shred some tires. Knowing from my MazSpeed3 days, I'm sure the wheel-hop is out of control in that civic.

Here is the article I think you were referring to about the drift mode technology and how it works: Ford Explains the Focus RS's "Drift Mode" ?*News ?*Car and Driver | Car and Driver Blog

We are going to have some REALLY cool cars in the coming years. If rumors have it, the next Speed3 will be AWD as well.
