So this weekend my friend blew her motor in her scion TC. Shenwas traveling on the interstate when all the sudden the RPMs rapidly went to zero (took about 3 seconds). We pulled over immediately and smoke was coming frommthe front of the car and the smell of burnt oil was pretty strong.. I knew exactly what it was because I've gone through it before.
I listened from the outside and asked her to turn the motor over... Hear small clunks from the cylinder 1 but doesn't sound like any where else...I'm thinking she fried the rings and possible shattered the piston skirts... She doesn't have cash for a new motor and someone to install it so she ask my if I could rebuild it...I priced out Pistons bearings Rods And rings To about $650 The crank and bearing for that are 700 bey themselves... I can and have done this before but my question is...is it worth the risk of buying all the parts only to find something else wrong? There is no cracks in the block or ANY oil leaking from anywhere. Which makes me think it's just the internal components... Opinions and ideas are all welcome before I jump in A new motor is 1800-2200 and labor for straight swap is about 1200 so I'm looking 2800-3500 for the al to do it as opposed to 600-1000 for me to do it |
