I have a stock 07 scion spec. All of a sudden, this summer, it developed a loud ticking noise coming from underneath the hood. It can be heard inside the car also, and occurs when I am accelerating. I took it to the dealership and they said that it is the fuel pump, and the noise is normal for aging scion tc's. It sucks!! Any one else had this happen? I don't understand how the fuel pump can get so loud after 2 years of being driven. I want to think it is something else and not the fuel pump. I have complained to scion about it, but they have never heard of such a proplem

Well, considering the fuel pump is in the tank, it shouldnt be making noise under the hood I have never heard of this being a normal issue. Of course "that is a normal thing" is a favorite term of techs when they dont know an answer...

The fuel injectors can be making noise, and they will right from the factory. That will be a clicking noise that is much faster than the engine rpm.

The loudness, frequency and sound of the noise is really needed to have an idea of what is going on.

I just started getting a loud ticking/clicking sound from my engine as well. It sounds like it's coming from near the belts. I don't know what it is, but I'm going to try to get the car in for an overall check up anyway. I have 48,000 miles on mine, with the only engine mod being a short ram intake.

I took this video of the sound. Is that similar to what you're hearing?

holy crap that sounds awefull. i know ever since i started using synthetic my valves got a little louder but never had that bad of a sound. it almost sounds like your alternator is making weird noises. and yah i have no clue why they said that the fuel pump was making noises cuz like blue said its in the rear of the car: in the tank sooooooo...

As a follow up, I just got a call from the auto shop, and they said that my problem is the water pump. Not saying that that's the problem with yours, but if it's the same sound and from the same place (near the radiator and belts), that's a likely candidate. My boss (who knows quite a bit about engines in general) looked at it yesterday and said that that's what he thought it was too.

He said it'd be about $240 to replace it, which isn't too bad.

I hope after 2 years it isn't the water pump.....I haven't gotten a chance to listen to the video yet, but I think it may be the fuel injectors (maybe that is what they told me, and I got confused...) I read another forum that asked about the valve ticking. My issue is simillar, but I don't have it go away when the oil is changed. I am using synthetic 5w20
