Default 2006 Scion Tc (need replacement key)

Hey everyone,

I am in a bit of a quandary. I've had my Tc for about 3 years. I've had some wear and tear on some things and one of those is my Key.

I bought the car used and it only came with 1 key

I found this picture online to show it (Pictured left)

Mine is cracked and comes apart if you are not careful when you turn the ignition or try to open the doors with it. It also, doesn't open the door anymore.. weird.

Now, I just came back from the dealership. I asked for a quote for a new key and was quoted exactly $400. I said no, since it's a crazy number.

Chelsea, the new receptionist said that it was high because there was a 're-programming' fee included because it was a 'new style' key.

Now, here's my question. I'll preface it with a comment. I've read that a new key, basic, 3 button is around $179 depending on where you go.

Could I buy this key and bring it to the dealer to program it for like a nominal fee?

The re-programming thing is BS, the owners manual (or online) tells you how to program the chip with an existing key (you may need two...). You can order the replacement online as long as it is made to work with you Scion, then take the key to a key cutting shop, get it made (they'll BS you about the chip) and go test the key to make sure it will open the door with the keyslot, not remote, as well as turning the ignition (it won't start until it's programmed). Anything else just let us know

You've just been RoboTuned

You can't program the chip with the car. The manual tells you how to program the TRANSPONDER.

You can, however, cut your existing chip out and place it in a new key. Just get the new key cut to the car and move the chip and transponder into it.
Amazon sells the key for like $9 shipped.

check my thread a copy pages back. This is exactly what I did.

DO NOT BUY THE KEY YOU POSTED
