Hey everyone...
I recently purchased a 2005 scion tc from a small used car dealer. The key I got from them has no electrical insides and is just the shell for a three button (lock/unlock/panic) key. I was wondering if I could but the key online and program it myself and then get it cut at a locksmiths, or do I have to take it into a dealership to buy/program the key. I am not looking to add remote start to the car just simply am looking to get a key that has the same three buttons on it. Please let me know, I have been looking online and am starting to get really confused and having mixed signals. Thank you !

the immobilizer chip you cannot program yourself. however, you can program the keyless entry yourself.

the keyless entry part is really the only thing that you mention is missing from your current key.
you can try to just buy that part alone.

the key is in really bad shape and needs to get replaced as well...
and I am not a car genius so I will ask ... what do you mean the immobilizer can't be programed and how will that effect my car?

there's a chip embedded inside the key that the ecu needs to start the vehicle.

you can buy a new key, reprogram the keyless entry yourself, have the key cut.. and then transplant your old chip into the new key if you don't wanna deal with going to the dealership.

The TC is equipped with an Immobilizer. The immobilizer chip is inside the key, and it sends a signal to the immobilizer pretty much saying "hey, I'm the right key, you can start and stay on". If the key is not correctly programmed or is not in the key, then the car will possibly start, but will either turn off shortly and when put into drive.

The key less entry is just a system that locks and unlocks your car for you. So you can program that to a new key. But you can't program the immobilizer chip. I believe you have to go to a dealer.

the electrical component that you see missing is only the keyless..
the immobilizer chip itself is that long black rectangle that you see glued into the plastic of the key.
